Went to Adolph Gasser in SF yesterday, picked up a couple more rolls of Vision 200t. Asked them about processing, they said they send it out to Yale. Asked them what they do with 16mm, they said they don't do anything, they suggest people go to Monaco Labs, about 5 blocks away. I knew the place, so I cruised over.
I walked in and waited for the counter-person to finish with the fellow that was ahead of me, dropping some 16mm film off for processing. The chick said "they should be ready tomorrow morning." He left, and I asked the woman if they could process Super8 Vision 200T. She said they don't do any Super8, since it's a reversal process, blah blah blah. I politely re-stated my question, emphasizing the VISION 200T part.
"Oh, the negative Kodak just came out with?"
I was actually surprised that she even realised there was a new S8 available. Unfortunately she said they couldn't do Super8 film, but she knows that some people do like that home-movie look. I looked at the two rolls the guy before me had left on the counter: two 100' cartons of friggin VISION stock!
Apparently, Monaco are a "pro" lab. She suggested Super8Sound in Burbank. I thanked her for her "help" and left.

So here's a technical question: Does anyone have an idea of what the increased labor and materials would cost to pop open a S8 cart, stick it in the machine, and put it on a 50' reel?
I'd love to try to talk them into at least doing S8 Vision. It's the same damn stock they process for 16mm. God the attitudes some people have about it is amazing.
It's worse than telling Harley riders I ride a Sportster!

I don't work in a lab, so I can't say I know exactly how they process motion picture film, but just to give her the benefit of the doubt, isn't there a different PHYSICAL technique for processing different stocks?
I mean, sure, it's the same TYPE of stock, but it IS different widths, and the machines must be different somehow.
I mean, call there again and ask if they process 65mm vision200T, and maybe she would say they don't do that either.
    Get it?
I could be wrong, but maybe that's what's going on.
    Try FotoKem in Burbank.

True... But let's go one step further:
I used to work in a photo lab. Our machines were set up for 35mm print film, C-41. We literally COULD NOT fit 120 or 220 film in the machines. But we DID process 110 cartridge film in the same machines.

Seems like the same concept could apply here.

I'm half ticked off by the fact that they don't (or won't) do S8 in their lab. If there's a major technical difficulty, I'll understand.
I'm more ticked about the attitudes and ignorance I see surrounding S8.
